Building a Better Marriage

Isn’t this picture adorable? So thankful for my wonderful friend Jordan for letting me use it!

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. 10 For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! 11 Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone?12 And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken. ESV Ecclesiastes 4: 9-12

Today I’m going to be starting a new series about marriage! We will spend 3 weeks with myself and two other lovely ladies/friends/bloggers discussing different topics on marriage! Lately God has been pressing on my heart to write a post about marriage. He has been pushing the hubs and I to really work on our marriage. Not because it is bad or anything but because it is something that should be constantly worked on. God did not intend for marriage to be mediocre! He intended marriage to be amazing and for us to work together as a team. During this series the ladies and I are going to be real and share with you things that we have struggled with and overcame issues.

Neil and I are very different people. I’m crazy, free spirited, out going, and quiet when at home (most of the time). Neil on the other hand is quiet (except at home), keeps more to himself, and very  disciplined. God designed us to be together because we balance each other out in so many ways. The hard part is that we both live in our own selfishness and want to be are own people. God has been calling me out and revealing that I need to do more things that he likes even though they are not my favorite things (like watching football). Everyday we are learning to grow more together and do things that God has intended for us.

God  intended marriage to be centered around him! The best thing we can do for our marriage is pray for each other and read the bible together. This can be easily forgotten and is one of the most important things we can do being married. Remembering to pray for each other while the other is at work or just praying for their day can make a huge difference. Also, praying together can help strengthen your spiritual like together. I can definitely tell a difference when I pray for Neil or when we pray together. God works in us so much more or at least I can see/feel it stronger.

One thing that I have realized after being married is that your sins are much more apparent. Before it was a lot easier to cover them up because I wasn’t around people all the time. This is a blessing and a hardship. My natural instinct is to run from my issues or just ignore them. Neil has helped me and pushed me in the right direction to help me face my fears or work on my sins. Since my sin is not just my sin anymore they are our sin. We constantly pray for our sins and for God to help us overcome them.

The next two weeks we will hear from two amazing women discussing different issues and blessings of marriage at different stages of life! Can’t wait!

Have you found anything that has helped or hurt your marriage?

Thank you so much for this post and reminding me that God intended marriage to be centered around him. My husband and I have been married for nine months now, and we learn everyday how important this is. We are slowly learning how important praying and being in the word TOGETHER is to our marriage, than doing it separate!

Looking forward to this series!

Hi,

Wowh, I am astonished by how God leads me these days of illness @ home. Yesterday I got on a blog of your friends and read about thankfullness, an issue I’m struggling with and desperately learning how to be more thankfull. Today I was just praying and thinking of our marriage (next april we will be married for 3 years) and here is your blog. You really are a blessing today :) and I am thankfull (!, hihi) for that. I’m looking forward to the serie :) .

Goodluck!

Christien

Don’t you love when God works in those kinds of ways! He always is surprising me and leading me to exactly what I need. I’m so glad I could do that!

God’s been working on my heart about marriage as well. One of the things He’s highlighted to me is to remember to pray for each other–I’m glad you mentioned that in this post! I’m amazed at how often I forget to pray for my husband. But when I do, he can tell a difference. And it’s the same when he prays for me. I’m so glad God paired me up with just the right person!

Hi Amy,

I have met you once before when I was with Jordan. I just want you to know that I love the series that you have done on “Building a Better Marriage”. I have enjoyed reading all of the posts. I know both Jordan and Carrie. I have reposted their entries on my blog, because I thought they were so good, they needed to be shared! This is the first I have read your post, and i too is amazing! I can relate to a lot of what you shared. It seems that we have very similar personalities as well as our husbands. :) I really liked what you said about our sins being more apparent. I also really enjoyed the part about praying for one another. I tend to forget to pray for my husband as much as I should. I am new to the blogging world. I really look forward to reading more of your posts!!
